| dc.description | James Backus, owner of one share in the Ohio Company of Associates, came to Marietta Ohio, from Connecticut in late May, 1788, less than two months after the arrival of the first settlers. He assisted in the division of lots, cleared lands, helped build a house, served as deputy sheriff, and kept a journal. From May to September, 1789, he recorded the earliest survey of parts of the Ohio Company's land located in federal survey ranges 12-17. This document, four small books tied into one, contains his field notes. He returned to Connecticut in 1791. | en_US |
