Title: Appointment of Rufus Putnam Surveyor General of the United States

Description: This document, bearing the seal of the United States and the signatures of George Washington, President, and Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State, dated 22 December 1796, appoints Rufus Putnam Surveyor General of the United States "during the pleasure of the President." On the reverse is the statement of Dudley Woodbridge, Justice of the Peace and Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Washington County in the Territory of the United States Northwest of the River Ohio, that Putnam came before him on 9 May 1797 and took the oath of office.
