| Title: | Rufus Putnam Journal of a Council with the Indians of the Wabash and Illinois at Post Vincennes |
| Author: | Putnam, Rufus, 1738-1824 |
| Description: | The journal included Putnam's speeches to the Indians, and their replies to him. Their principal spokesman is Ducoigne, who speaks English. Putnam assures the tribes of the good will of the Americans and President Washington. The Indians want peace with the Americans as they have had with the French. They want to keep their land and do not want any more white settlements north of the Ohio. Articles of agreement (not give in the journal) are signed on 27 September 1792. William McIntosh, "sworn clerk," signed the journal. |
