This document, bearing the seal of the United States and the signatures of G. Washington, president, and Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State, dated 10 October 1796, appoints Rufus Putnam Surveyor General of the United States "during the pleasure of the President . . . and to the end of the next session of the Senate." On the reverse is the statement of John Cleves Symmes that Putnam came before him, one of the judges of the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio, on 29 October 1796 and took the oath of office. |
