| dc.description | Return Jonathan Meigs, appointed a surveyor by the Ohio Company of Associates, arrived in Marietta, Ohio, in 1788. Active in the affairs of the settlement he drew up its first code of civic regulations. He later became a justice of the peace, a territorial judge, and a member of the territorial legislature. In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson appointed him agent for both the Cherokee Nation and the War Department in Tennessee. Internal evidence indicates that these unsigned field notes are Meigs's work. They include a description of an encounter with Indians. Mentions lands near the Kanawha. | en_US |
