| Description: | Return Jonathan Meigs, appointed a surveyor by the Ohio Company of Associates, arrived in Marietta, Ohio, in 1788. Active in the affairs of the settlement he drew up its first code of civic regulations. He later became a justice of the peace, a territorial judge, and a member of the territorial legislature. In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson appointed him agent for both the Cherokee Nation and the War Department in Tennessee. This document contains Meigs's field notes for surveys in federal survey ranges, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 14, following the meanders of the Ohio, Muskingum, and Hocking rivers. |
